Minogue - Chapter 4&5 Reflection

In chapter 4, the primary focus was the overall layout of groups of text, and ways to improve the legibility of that text. It is mentioned that designers must carefully consider what typeface to use in any given design so as to provide contrast between letters and words when necessary. I learned that it is important for a typeface to contain very distinguishable letterforms so that readers don't mistake one letter for another. Additionally, I was informed about proper spacing between characters, words, and lines of text. Spacing factors as a main component of a document's legibility and cohesion, therefore it must be taken into consideration when determining the layout of a group of text.

Chapter 5 gives a thorough explanation of proportion and the use of grids in typography. One important principle used for proportioning is the golden section, in which the radius of a series of quarter-circles increases in a mathematical sequence to form the perfect spiral. On another note, it is very important to lay out text and images in a proportional, visually pleasing manner. Doing this will ensure that the content is delivered to the viewer in the same way it was intended to by the designer.
