7 Deadly Sin Idea - Fernando Pena

My theme for the project are the continents that are shared by the human species. The idea is that because there are 7 continents there will be one sin assigned to each of them based on research that I've done. Each continent will have its own reason for receiving one of the sins, and have a slogan that goes along with some central core that speaks of each continent. Listed below are the sins that will be assigned to each continent and the reasoning behind it. The idea is to not only make a series of typographical graphics but also put these graphics together into its own kind of map. The map will attempt to express that the 7 deadly sins aren't just central to one culture or country but that it echoes throughout all of mankind's populated or claimed regions, and with this map have one slogan that expresses the destructive path mankind is on collectively.

Lust - Asia: Asia has several countries that are quite overpopulated and so many laws have been enforced to control that overpopulation. Unfortunately it continues to become a problem for this particular continent, and a problem that those in power continue to address as the years have gone on. South Korea in particular actually promotes lustful actions for males. I have researched that it isn't uncommon for the average South Korean married man to have an affair with several partners at hotels that are suited for that particular act. The parking lot and lobby of these hotels are designed in such a way to keep the anonymity of the men as they perform their acts.

Gluttony - North America: Unfortunately some countries within this continental region are less gluttonous than others there seems to be a general idea that more is always better. This is certainly true for a country like the U.S. where statistics have shown many times over that obesity is becoming a problem in the country, so much so that they are calling it an epidemic. Mexico's history speaks on this as well as their tribal ancestors set out to conquer land from each other and to this day have a problem with drug cartels and money hungry politicians that only ask for more for themselves while the underprivileged, scared, and weak suffer under their feet.

Sloth - Antarctica: While Antarctica isn't generally thought much of because it isn't heavily populated, and is home to conditions that wouldn't be truly suitable for human establishment there are some aspects that I'd like to touch on here that cause this continent to be sloth-like in nature. Antarctica has 8 countries that claim sovereignty over certain parts of the continent and certain islands. This being said Antarctica is home to many of research facilities that are manned year round. The human population on Antarctica fluctuates between 1000 - 5000  people year round, naturally during the winter is when the number dwindles. With 8 countries claiming sovereignty on one mainland it's hard to get much done collectively. Friction has happened between these countries considering the sovereignty claimed isn't universally recognized. Some parts of each country's territories overlap and it causes problems between them. This echoes an old human problem that we've always dealt with and only stagnates any progression in the direction of collective harmony with each other. So nothing much gets done here and the research hasn't spoken too much for itself. While in the typical sense this isn't sloth like I'd like to argue that the stagnancy of progression on human nature and lack of knowledge that the research speaks on is sloth like to a degree.

Wrath - South America: South America has several countries that are known to run rampant with the destructive nature of drugs and the violence that comes with it. Places like Columbia and Rio have some of the highest crime rates in the world considering what goes on there behind the scenes. Many of the police forces in this country are lacking in force, corrupt in nature, or just plain out manned by the drug cartels that run through those countries. I'd like to suggest that because of this and many other issues South America faces that violence is large issue the people of this continent face and Wrath is the appropriate sin to assign to it.

Envy - Australia: A search for Australia garnered a BBC article that was written about a study done on the 7 deadly sins themselves. The article used a point system and several aspects that all play a part in each of the sins to analyze how high that was in countries, and Australia ranked unusually high in the envious category. While I don't like to base my research on one source, I'm also willing to add that I've found several sources that say that Australia is a place that people envy the most. The way that the government is run and the benefits the citizens have all cause outsiders to be envious of what Australia has to offer to its people.

Pride - Europe: Europe has been long known to pride itself largely on the fact that the people of the world somehow originated from some portion in or near it's continent and then spread out. Certainly this is true in the case of the U.S. where the British pride themselves on the fact that had it not been the motherland of Britain the U.S.'s early settlers wouldn't have had a birthplace or a language to establish with when they finally left. As a Puerto Rican I here much talk about how Spain is quite prideful of the fact that without them Puerto Rico itself wouldn't have been established. France is prideful in its own sense about its culture specifically and language, while Germany attempts to take a back seat to all of this yet still exudes a certain sense of pride on what they have to offer the world in terms of technology. The list can go on, but I suspect that not only from my experience abroad but from the history of conflicts that I've read that pride is best suited for the continent of Europe.

Greed - Africa: While many would see this and wonder why I chose greed for Africa and not for another continent I have this story to tell. As I studied business ethics in Europe I was taught by a fellow who had found himself in a career involving business for a good portion of his life. After his ethics were too far challenged and life put in danger he felt it was time to quit and become a teacher. He told us a story once of how it is that business happens in Africa. When my professor was a businessman he found himself having to travel often to make business deals on the behalf of the company he worked for. He found himself once traveling to Africa to make a deal that would attempt to establish a presence for his company in Africa. My professor soon found out that when business deals are made in Africa it's actually quite customary that bribes are included to sway the person they're making the deal with in order to be able to compete with any other potential business deals that others would make, and even if there weren't any other offers a bribe was necessary anyhow. My professor knew the laws on making and taking bribes and he wouldn't allow for his morals or the legality of the situation to be compromised so he didn't feed the greed that was apparent when making the business deal. Unfortunately my professor went back to his company empty handed.

This is my idea. Hopefully it is reasonable and ambitious enough to attempt for this project.
