Picerne - Chapter 7

Chapter 7 focuses on typographic technology. The chapter is split into sections that discuss hand composition, linotype, monotype, ludlow, display phototypesetting, keyboard phototypesetters, scanning and laser systems, and software. The section I found to be interesting in discussing typographic technology would be the section entitled, "Ludlow". As the section states, Ludlow is a semiautomatic linecaster. What is interesting about the Ludlow is that it has both hand and machine components. Even though it combined the two different elements, it created a longer production time. The process was extremely time consuming. Also, the Ludlow could only produce type between 6 and 144 points. The machine was mostly used to produce large typefaces for displays and headlines (p. 129). Even though it was inventive for the time, it was not efficient enough to produce a mass amount of type.
